The area is regarded as England's golfing capital, with seven championship courses including Royal Birkdale, which recently hosted The Open in July 2008. The town is at the centre of England's golf coast and features more than twenty courses including the '3 Royals' which can be reached in less than an hour. 
Southport hosts world famous events, such as the annual Air Show and the Southport Flower Show, frequented by celebrities from around the country. Plus the Southport Food & Drink Festival, the International Jazz Festival, Summer Classics and the British Musical Fireworks Championships. 
Beach life in Southport is spectacular, with more than 20 miles of coastline and many sandy beaches perfect for relaxation. There is also the longest overland pier in the country with superb panoramic views from the terminus. The pier is suitable for foot walkers, or you can take the narrow gage rail. The wildlife and wetland areas further along the coast are readily accessible and are unrivalled for bird and wildlife.
